Canton Beach

Tuggerah Lake - Canton Beach

Canton Beach is a lakeside village located on the Central Coast of Australia.

The name 'Canton Beach' originates from the 1860s when Chinese fishermen settled in the area and dried, smoked and pickled prawns to ship to China.

Things to Do in Canton Beach

The town is situated on the foreshore of Tuggerah Lake, one of three interconnected lakes with one channel open to the sea. The lakes are popular for fishing, boating, kayaking, windsurfing and SUP.

Fishing is great in the early mornings and late afternoons – you can catch bream and flathead – and prawning is excellent in the summer.

There's also a lakeside walking and cycling path with picnic spots, playgrounds and gym equipment. Kids enjoy swimming at the sandy beach in the shallow water and playing at the fenced sensory playground.

Enjoy an amazing sunset by the lake!

Want to bring your dog? You can walk along the lake shore with your pet in tow or let it run free at Budgewoi Beach. Also, Canton Beach Holiday Park has dog-friendly sites.

If you have a boat, you'll find a ramp at the end of Belbowrie Street. You can also hire kayaks and SUP at Canton Beach Paddleshack.

If you like bushwalking, head to Wyrrabalong National Park or Munmorah State Conservation Area for some great trails.

Nearby Beaches

If you're holidaying in Canton Beach, you can easily get to beautiful beaches just up the road. You've got plenty of options for a refreshing swim.

Lakes Beach, which is patrolled, is at the southern end of a long 8-kilometre stretch of sand. Birdie Beach and Red Ochre Beach are in Munmorah State Conservation Area at the northern end.

You'll also find Soldiers Beach south of Norah Head. It's a popular swimming and surfing beach with lifeguard patrol. Visit Norah Head and enjoy a nice walk around the lighthouse and stunning ocean views.

Where to Eat and Have a Coffee

Rise Mofo Canton Beach

Plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants are 5 minutes away in Toukley or 10 minutes away at The Entrance.

I highly recommend Rise Mofo, located at 327 Main Road, for your morning coffee. Enjoy an exceptional coffee and a Salami Toastie.

For dinner, there are a couple of excellent Thai restaurants. For something special, check out Hart & Soul Bar and Grill, located at 350 Main Road. Enjoy delicious tapas, slow cooked meats, loaded fries, scotch fillet, ribs or a burger.

Most holidaymakers here stay at Canton Beach Holiday Park

The holiday park is right by the lake. They offer caravan sites, camping sites and cabins. It's a natural spot with lots of trees and native wildlife. Kids enjoy the jumping pillow and playground.
